How to use the information
- Apply for your passport online: it is 6 € cheaper than at a service point (42 € vs. 48 €), and normal delivery takes about 8 working days.
- If your flight arrives more than 3 hours late, claim standard compensation from the airline – €250, €400 or €600 depending on the flight distance.
- Winter holidays are staggered across weeks 8–10: flights and Lapland accommodation fill up fastest during your own region's holiday week.
- The EU's ETIAS travel authorisation applies only to travellers from outside the EU, not to Finnish citizens. Its start date has not been confirmed, and according to the latest information the launch will be postponed to 2027.
- In June 2026 the EU reached a provisional agreement on reforming air passenger rights; the current compensation amounts and the 3-hour threshold remain in force until the reform enters into force.
- Before a trip abroad, submit a travel notification to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (um.fi) so that you can be reached in a crisis.
- The tax-free mileage allowance fell for 2026 from 0,59 euros to 0,55 euros per kilometre, but the domestic full daily allowance rose to 54 euros. Update your travel expense templates and software.
- The daily allowance is tax-free only when the business trip is to a place more than 15 kilometres from both the regular place of work and the home. No such limit applies to the mileage allowance.
- On the travel expense claim, record the start and end time of the trip, the route, the purpose and the kilometres driven. Without documentation, the reimbursement may be treated as taxable pay.
- From 1.1.2026, VAT on domestic accommodation and passenger transport (taxi, train, bus, domestic flights) is 13.5%. Keep receipts so the company can deduct the tax on business-related trips.
