The maximum tax-exempt sports and culture benefit rises for 2026 from €400 to €540 (Parliament approved in September 2026), and VAT on sports services is 13.5%.

Frequently asked questions: Training Radar

How much does a swimming hall cost?

The single adult fee in the largest cities is about 5.70–9.50 euros. For example, in Helsinki's Urheiluhallit swimming halls it is 6.00 €, in Espoo 6.70 €, in Vantaa 6.50 €, in Turku 8.40 € and at AaltoAlvari in Jyväskylä 9.50 €. Children, pensioners, students and the unemployed usually get a discount, and small children get in free with an adult.

Where can you work out for free?

Outdoor gyms, exercise equipment and fitness stairs are free and open to everyone. According to the Lipas database there are, for example, 267 in Helsinki, 118 in Espoo and 92 in Vantaa. In addition, Espoo gives Espoo residents aged 68 and over a free +68 Sports Wristband, and in Tampere people aged 65 and over swim free on weekdays 9 am–3 pm.

Can you try a gym for free?

Some chains offer a trial. Fressi has a free two-week trial and EasyFit an introductory week for €5. Liikun's front page mentions a free introduction Mon–Wed 16–19. Campaigns change often, so check the terms on the chain's own website.

What does guided exercise cost in the city?

City groups are affordable. In Vantaa, a fitness class costs €31–61 and water aerobics €26–50 per term, in Jyväskylä a weekly group costs €39.90 per semester, and in Tampere a pay-per-visit group costs €5.70 per session. In Pori, a seasonal water exercise group costs €23 and a single-visit group €2, plus the swimming hall fee.

How much should you exercise?

According to the UKK Institute, people aged 18–64 should do at least 2 hours 30 minutes of brisk exercise per week or at least 1 hour 15 minutes of vigorous exercise. In addition, muscle strength and motor control should be trained at least twice a week. According to THL's Healthy Finland survey, fewer than half of adults meet the recommendation.

How much is the exercise and culture benefit in 2026?

The tax-free maximum has been raised from 400 euros to 540 euros per year retroactively from 1.1.2026 (HE 113/2026). Parliament approved the law in September 2026, and it takes effect once confirmed. The employer decides how much of the benefit it provides, so your own benefit may be smaller.

What can the sports and culture benefit be used for?

For self-directed exercise, such as the gym, swimming pool and guided groups, as well as culture. Following the change in law, the benefit can also be used for nature activities requiring physical exercise, such as fishing and hunting permits, equipment rental, and coaching and training programmes (Taloustaito 21.9.2026).

Which is cheaper, a gym membership or a pay-per-visit fee?

Divide the membership's monthly price (and the joining fee over the commitment period) by the number of visits. For example, EasyFit's Basic costs 36,90 €/month; with eight visits a month, a visit costs about 4,60 €. A single swimming hall entry costs 5,70–9,50 € in large cities. Treenitutka's calculator does the comparison for you.

Is the exercise and culture benefit tax-free for the employer and deductible?

The benefit is tax-free for the employee up to 540 €/year (2026) when it is available to all staff and given as vouchers or a means of payment. For the employer, the cost of the benefit is a personnel expense. Because the benefit is not pay, no pay-related contributions are paid on it.

Does a fitness benefit have to be offered to all employees?

Yes. The tax exemption requires that the benefit is available to the whole staff (Finnish Tax Administration). If the benefit is given to only some, it is taxable pay.

Can the employer raise the benefit mid-year?

Yes. The raised maximum of 540 euros applies to the whole of tax year 2026, so the employer can still increase the benefit towards the end of the year once the law has been confirmed. The increase does not happen automatically.

Is a bicycle benefit still tax-exempt?

Not for new contracts. The tax exemption for employment-benefit bicycles ended for contracts made on or after 24.4.2025. Bicycles obtained before that retain the tax exemption for the duration of the contract, for a maximum of five years (KPMG 18.12.2025).

Tips

How to use the information

  1. If you are over 65, check the senior benefits in your own city. In Espoo, people aged 68 and over swim and use the gym free of charge; in Tampere, people aged 65 and over swim free of charge on weekdays from 9 am to 3 pm.
  2. Swim in the morning: in Vantaa, morning swimming Mon–Fri 6–10 am costs €5.00 and at AaltoAlvari in Jyväskylä €6.50 instead of the normal price.
  3. Try a gym chain before committing: Fressi has a free two-week trial and EasyFit a one-week introduction for 5 euros. Read the campaign terms and the notice period before joining.
  4. You can find free outdoor gyms and fitness stairs on the Lipas.fi map. In Helsinki, for example, there are over 250 and in Espoo over 100.
  5. If you swim or go to the gym every week, compare the single-entry price with a multi-visit or season pass. In Turku, for example, a 10-visit wristband costs €65, while a single ticket is €8.40.
  6. Calculate the price of a gym membership per visit: a 40 € monthly fee and 8 visits a month comes to 5 € a visit, which is cheaper than the single-entry price of most swimming pools. If you go fewer than four times a month, a single entry or a multi-visit card may work out cheaper.
  7. Use the exercise and culture benefit before the end of the year. From 2026 the benefit can also be used for equipment rental, such as renting bicycles, kayaks and skis, once the law has been confirmed.
  8. Offer the sports and culture benefit to all staff – only then is it tax-exempt. The benefit cannot be paid in cash but is given as vouchers or a payment instrument.
  9. If you want to raise the benefit to 540 euros already for 2026, decide on the increase soon and notify the staff and the service provider. The increase does not happen automatically, even though the tax-free maximum rises.
  10. Monitor the usage rate of the benefit in the provider's report. If many do not use the benefit, tell staff about the uses, such as swimming halls, gyms and now also equipment rental.
